This online update is free if you complete it within 3 months of getting your new passport. For most adult OCI card holders, this is the only way to update OCI after getting a new passport.

An OCI reissue means you will receive a new physical OCI card with your updated details. You must submit a paid application through VFS Global and pay the required government fees. A reissue is only required after certain age milestones, as per OCI rules.

The Age Rules: 20 & Under, 21–49, and 50+ 

How you update OCI after getting a new passport depends entirely on your age when your new U.S. passport was issued. 

If You Are 20 or Younger

Children’s faces change quickly as they grow. Because of this, the OCI card must be reissued every time they get a new passport until they turn 20. To get the new OCI card, you must apply through VFS Global, pay the required fee, and submit updated photos.

If You Are 21–49 

Once you turn 20, you must get a new OCI card one time after you receive your first new U.S. passport. After that, if you get another new U.S. passport between the ages of 21 and 49, you only need to update your passport details online. The 3-Month Deadline & What It Costs (2026 Rules)

• Within 3 Months: Updating your passport details online is completely free if you submit the update within three months of getting your new U.S. passport.
• After 3 Months: If you do not update your passport details within 3 months, you can still do the update online. However, you will have to pay a $25 late fee, plus a $3 ICWF fee. 
• Mandatory Reissue Cases: If you need the one-time mandatory OCI card reissue after age 20 or after age 50, the government fee is $25, plus a $3 ICWF fee, and you must also pay the standard VFS Global service charge, which is usually between $15.90 and $19.00. 

Note: Do not confuse this with the $275 fee. The $275 fee applies only when you are applying for an OCI card for the first time.

Can You Travel to India While It’s Pending? 

You can travel to India while your OCI passport update is still being processed. To ensure smooth boarding and immigration clearance, you must carry: 

• Your existing physical OCI card. 
• Your brand-new US passport. 
• Your old US passport that is currently linked to the OCI card. 

It is helpful to carry the pending online submission acknowledgement, but it cannot be used as proof of entry on its own. 

US Consulate Jurisdiction Note: If you are applying for a full paid reissue, you must submit your physical application through the VFS Global Centre that serves the consulate with jurisdiction over your area.
